The Dead Man as you've read about previously started out as a simple man. His name was Daniel and he was a simple man living a happy married life. One day it all changed though Daniel's wife Miriam become terminally ill. He did all he could to save her and make her happy while she was still here so she'd stay, but it wasn't enough and Daniel knew this as well as Miriam. Once Miriam passed life was hard on him and he could not bear the sorrow any longer.
Daniel had heard legend at the local pubs of an old witch that could bring back the dead through dark magic. He had never believed any sort of thing but he had never been a desperate man before. He traveled through the pubs drinking, mourning, and learning legends about the old witch. On a full moon with heavy fog he needed to see the witch and strike a bargain for his deceased wife.
The night had finally come, fog as thick as wool with the moon shining brightly so he had to venture into the woods and find this witch. After an hour or so of wandering through the woods he was tired and weary. Depression and liqour had made him a weak man and he stumbled down a hill ripping open his knee on the fall. He thought all hope was lost and he would freeze to death out here for the night had be come chilly. As he turned his head to the side to catch the glimpse of what he thought would be his last memory he saw an old run down cottage. He quickly rose up and started absent mindedly stumbling towards his last hope. He burst through the cottage door and in it he saw the witch. "I want my wife back" he said. "Oh I know what you seek, but what can you offer me?" replied the witch. "I can offer you nothing..nothing but my soul." A wicked toothless smile crept across her face "A soul for a soul, eh? This is something I can make do with. Now go to your wife on the next full moon and tell her to rise up from the grave and return to you." Daniel smiled and turned to leave the cottage but stopped as the witch spoke "Halt, did you think I would let you leave without me stating my side of the bargain? You shall come here every full moon, you shall abandon God, and you shall come and take care of me in my old age, because I am the last of the Wicken here." Daniel asked "How will I know when to come?" The old witch cackled and says "I'll summon you, now leave boy." Daniel left the cabin and stumbled around until he made it to his house. He fell into bed and awoke next morning with a terrible headache and the memory of the events the previous night.
He got up and went to work. When he came home and opened his door and entered the kitchen he saw a small message written in some red ink that could possibly be blood. It read "Daniel come to my cottage now." Daniel blew it off and went to bed. As he awoke the next morning and went down stairs the message had become bigger and it was obviously written in blood. He left the message alone. He never went into that kitchen again. Daniel came home and went to bed never entering the kitchen, until one night while laying in bed he heard a cry....the cry of his wife. Daniel rushed out of bed not and down to the kitchen not even bothering to light a candle.
He could not believe his eyes when he saw the witch in his kitchen and his wife along with her. The witch had his wife suspened writing the message in blood. Daniel suddenly went mad, the walls started to bleed and all her could hear was his wife crying and calling out to him in pain. The witch turned to him and said "You shall now be damned to walk this earth for eternity in endless pain. You did not heed my call or follow my instructions so you will be punished!" Then it all went black, and thats how the Dead Man came to be.
